CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name:  Santana Lopez
Age: 17
Canon: CANON
Canon point:  Season 3, Episode 7 (I Kissed a Girl)

Personality:
In the beginning Santana was just a cheerleader side character, one of Quinn’s lackeys and self proclaimed bitch, but she grew to be much more than that. While her attitude is a constant, her personality grows. She both defies and encompasses the high school cheerleader stereotype. Yes, she’s a bitch, easy, sleeps around, mean, cares too much about popularity, and stays on the Cheerios because it provides her with the status she wants. But she also has a softer side to her, she cares, is honest and says what she thinks (even at the expense of others), and she even volunteers at a hospital (her dad is a doctor and the outfit she is supposed to wear is pretty hot).

Santana’s sense of morality is pretty skewed. At first she joins the Glee club as a spy for Sue, and she no problem with that. It seems fun and hey, she’s popular so why not take down a few unpopular kids? She also sees other people’s boyfriends as fair game, even if they’re dating a friend of hers. She’s fine with playing with hearts for a personal gain. She’s good at manipulating people, more than just Brittany who is a bit slow, like when she convinced Mercedes that Kurt liked her romantically. Again, she does this for Sue, another ploy to destroy the Glee club. Brittany confesses that Santana told her that two girls kissing isn’t cheating when one or both of them has a boyfriend because the plumbing is different. Sex isn’t dating. Santana’s not really a born leader, she follows Sue and Quinn, but she’ll put a facade that makes it seem like she’s confident and in control.

Confidence is actually something she lacks. While on the surface she looks like she has everything under control, she doesn’t. Someone with amazing self confidence wouldn’t breast implants before her Junior year of high school. She’s incredibly insecure. It stems from the need to be noticed, and to not be different. Being Latina already makes her different and why add fuel to the fire? This is also the reason she won’t come out. (Santana’s sexuality is a whole other can of worms, she was perfectly content sleeping with males until she realized her feelings for Brittany and decided she was a lesbian. This is after saying that she is attracted to males, females, and once has a sex dream about something shaped like a person. But since she loves Brittany she calls herself a lesbian when she’s probably more bisexual or pansexual.) She doesn’t want to be labeled and is afraid of the consequences. When she confesses to Brittany she tells her that all of her anger and bitchiness comes from the fact she has all these feelings that she can’t show. She won’t allow herself to be herself. She’s afraid of what people would say.

On the other hand, Santana says what she thinks. In her own words, she’s a judgmental bitch (coupled with her close lesbianism gives her awesome gaydar), keeps it real and she’s really honest with people when they suck. She is not afraid to say it how it is. But that also prompts the true remark that she can give criticism but not take it. In reality people think very little of her because of how she treats them and because of her reputation. Santana thinks that if you look in the mirror and you don’t like what you see then you should change it. She did it herself with the implants and sees nothing wrong with others doing that as well, which is why she’ll point out what she thinks it wrong.

It’s no surprise that Santana is a bit shallow, she literally cries when Sue tells her that her tanning privileges were revoked. She is also rather possessive for one who will sleep with other people’s boyfriends without a second thought. It started first with Puck when he was getting close with Quinn and Lauren, and now she’s possessive of Brittany even if she’s dating Artie. She knows how to keep someone enticed, for one her sexting is too hot to erase (her words) and hates that sex may not be enough to keep them around. In that sense she has a high self image, or high sense of privilege, in the sense that she’s hot and why can’t she sleep with them. Santana is aggressive when it comes to pretty much everything and hates not getting what she wants. Her feelings also come out when she’s drunk, her being a weepy hysterical drunk and not understanding why not everyone loves her.

Santana isn’t all bitchiness and negativity, she looks genuinely happy when performing with the others in Glee club. She’s in the Cheerios for the status but is in the Glee club because she loves it. No one forces her to be there and it’s the best part of her day, she wouldn't go and mess that up. Even if she can hardly stand most of them. She has a love-hate relationship with them, but then again she has that with everyone.

update: Santana hates being told that she’s awesome, she knows that she is and wants other to recognize it but when it’s told straight to her face she doesn’t know how to react. She doesn’t regret slapping Finn, in fact she’d do it again and hates that Finn blackmailed her into the Glee lesson. The more people try and make her come out and accept herself the more she’ll fight back and throw insults. You can’t force Santana to do anything. Likes that people support her but again if she didn’t ask for help outright then she’ll protect herself by insulting others, she’s extremely defensive. She won’t show it but she’s extremely grateful for what the others are doing for her. Angry that Finn is forcing her out of the closet. He told her that one day she’ll start attacking herself and he meant physically but what he doesn’t realize is that Santana has been emotionally attacking herself for the longest time, she’s just awesome at now showing it. She pretends that she’s a really important person to everyone but she knows that isn’t true, so when someone tells her that she is important she doesn’t know how to react. The fact that everyone is acting like she’s so important throws her for a loop. One of the reasons she didn’t want to come out is because how people will treat her, especially the whole well if you have sex with me then I bet you won’t be into girls anymore mentality, which she ends up facing right away. While she prides herself on always having a comeback and having the ability to rip anyone down, when that time came she didn’t know what to say. Santana Lopez was speechless, and that never happens.

She tells everyone that she told her parents and that they were okay with it, but she actually hasn't told them yet. The more Finn and the Glee club thinks she’s out, the more they’ll leave the issue, and her, alone. Coming out to her grandmother is more important to her than coming out to her parents. Tried so hard to push away her feelings for Brittany, wanted to keep it locked inside but she grew tired of fighting herself, and while she doesn’t appreciate being forced out she does recognize it’s good for her emotionally. It broke her that her grandmother rejected her and kicked her out of the house.

Contrary to popular belief, Santana takes school very seriously, it isn't some place that she goes to because she has to and wants to socialize. She wants to get out of Lima, either because of her cheerleading, singing, grades, or all three. While if one was to look at her during class it would seem as if she wasn't paying attention she actually is. Santana does all her work and does it well, and doesn't appreciate when she gets talked down to or feels as if she's being shortchanged.
